Recently I returned West for a week-long orientation/conference. Sadly, I have to admit when I started out planning and working towards this I did not have the best attitude about it. An elder of mine had highly encouraged and counseled me to attend as a part of the continuous process in me figuring out and planning towards the future.
I knew early on that a company I'd been applying to work with would require me to take some time off and that it might be during school but I had hoped they'd have a nearby branch that I could visit and that perhaps I could arrive or leave a little early.
I was non-too-pleased after being informed, the same week after I'd returned from the West this fall, that not only did they have a set orientation schedule requiring you to attend the entire week, not only would I be required to take a week off from school and plan lessons for a sub for a week but that I HAD to travel all the way back to the West for the conference!
"I just LEFT there, I don't want to go all the way back again! I don't want to have to write subplans! I don't want to have to get caught up after a week of being gone from my kids! I don't even really want to go to this conference. Can't I just meet with a representative on this side of the world and have an interview? This is REALLY wreaking havoc on my language development!" Those were the thoughts that flooded my mind. To add fuel to the fire I had recently been thinking about Girl Scout cookies. Those yummy cookies that only come out once a year that I hadn't had in almost 2 years. I had thought that maybe I could work this trip out to my advantage and get my "cookie-fix" while I was at it. I did some online research and was appalled to find that Girl Scout cookies would indeed go on sale-the DAY I WAS LEAVING! Talk about kicking someone when their down and rubbing salt all up in their wounds! I have to travel all the way back there
Thankfully, the Father helped me think and meditate on the fact that He has provided well for me by elders and friends and family who love Him and seek His will in how they love and care for me. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, He has faithfully used their counsel as a means of guidance and direction in my life. Further, I knew that not just doing this, but joyfully and peacefully submitting to authority was what the Father desired of me. By the time the trip had started I was at the place where I was willing for whatever the Father would be pleased to bring from it.
I made lots new friends and am so thankful for the ways that I was challenged by all the different people that were placed in my path as well as ways my faith was challenged.
The day before I left a lot of people from the conference wanted to get together for dinner. My roommate was talking with a potential employer and I didn't want her to not go or want to go but have to walk there by herself so I told someone in the group that I'd call him when we were ready to leave so they could swing back and pick us up.
When they were finally done speaking I was explaining the plan to her and the potential employer said he would be more than happy to give us a ride. We headed to his car and as I climbed into the back seat I noticed a grocery bag with a box that had a girl scout cookie logo on it. I quickly asked where he a Brit had gotten the bag of American girl scout cookies and if there were indeed girl scout cookies in it. He told me he had gotten them from the grocery store that day. I insisted that couldn't be possible because girl scout cookies wouldn't go on sale until the following day. He was intrigued that I knew this and asked how I came to know. I explained and he told me that he happened to go to the store earlier that day and there was a lady and girl scout out there with cookies. Apparently they HAD relayed to him that the sale didn't start until the following day but for some reason or the other they had decided to start a day early and he decided to buy 2 boxes. Then he asked me to have a look in the bag and see if either of the boxes were cookies that I liked because. Guess what was in the bag.....1 box of thin mints and 1 box of Samoas! At this point he insisted I take both boxes because he'd be around a few days more and could always get some later but clearly I was a big fan and that must have been exactly why he ran into those girl scouts earlier and they were selling cookies before they were really supposed to be.
I know this is a really small thing, but in the midst of my bickering and complaining on the way to this conference I thought it was a real kindness of the Lord to work out every single detail to show kindness to me in such an unexpected way. Through girl scout cookies. I couldn't help but think He is involved in every single detail of my life. There are no accidents, even the little things He has His loving hand in. I know that He has evidenced His love to me in an even greater and far reaching way but for some reason, I tend to forget or not apply the reality of it. So when I fear, get nervous or anxious about the future, when I despair over the way things are going, when I fuss over what I want but don't have I want to remember this very real, seemingly inconsequential act of His love and kindness He showed me.
